Pick the Gili Islands if you have 3 nights or fewer and want turtles, sunsets and a car-free island; pick mainland Lombok if you have 5 or more nights and want surf beaches, Rinjani and waterfalls.

With a week, the honest answer is both: 4 nights on the mainland and 3 on a Gili, linked by a 15–30 minute boat from Bangsal harbour. The Gilis are compact and social; Lombok is big, wild and far less crowded.

Factor Mainland Lombok Gili Islands
Best for Surfers, hikers, road-trippers Snorkellers, divers, social travellers
Getting around Scooter or driver; long distances Walk, bicycle or cidomo (horse cart)
Signature day Rinjani trek or Senaru waterfalls Snorkelling with turtles
Crowds Spread out, quiet outside Kuta Busy, especially Gili Trawangan
Minimum stay 4–5 nights 2–3 nights
Ideal 7-night split 4 nights 3 nights

What mainland Lombok gives you that the Gilis can’t

Lombok is a proper island with mountains, and that is the whole point. In the south, Kuta Mandalika is a short drive from Lombok International Airport and works as a surf and beach base.

Tanjung Aan is the postcard bay, and the Gerupuk breaks are reached by local boat: expect AUD 12–15 · USD 8.50–11 (IDR 150,000–200,000) for a morning session, with prices depending on group size and how well you negotiate.

Rice terraces cascading down a hillside near Mount Rinjani, Lombok

In the north, Senaru sits at the foot of Mount Rinjani. The Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls are a short hike from the village, with entry around AUD 1.50–2 · USD 1.10–1.40 (IDR 20,000–25,000) plus a local guide fee charged per group.

Rinjani itself is a serious 2–4 day trek; the national park charges foreigners AUD 19 · USD 14 (IDR 250,000) per day on the main Sembalun, Senaru and Torean routes, so a 3-day trek costs AUD 57 · USD 42 in permits before you pay a trekking company.

What surprises most Australians is the space: quiet roads, rice fields and Sasak villages. Our Lombok travel guide covers the full loop if you want to see the whole island.

The Sade village update you need to know

Many itineraries still send you to Sade, the Sasak weaving village between the airport and Kuta. On 22 August 2026 a fire destroyed around 120 traditional houses there, and Tempo reported hundreds of residents lost their homes. Recovery work is under way and local operators say the village is closed to visitors for now.

Ask your driver about Sukarara for weaving instead, and treat any tour still selling Sade as out of date.

What the Gilis give you that Lombok can’t

The three Gilis (Trawangan, Meno and Air) ban cars and motorbikes, so you walk, cycle or take a cidomo. You can circle any of them on foot in an afternoon. The draw is the water: green and hawksbill turtles graze the sea-grass off Gili Meno’s north coast and along Gili Air’s east-coast reef, and Meno has the circle of 48 underwater statues most snorkel trips stop at.

The social side is real too. Trawangan has the bars and the late nights; Air is the middle ground; Meno is the quiet one. Choosing between the first two is its own decision, and we compare them properly in Gili Trawangan vs Gili Air, so we won’t repeat it here.

The trade-off: they are small and busy in peak season. Four days is plenty.

Getting between Lombok and the Gilis: Bangsal boat times

Bangsal harbour on Lombok’s north-west coast is the crossing point. Public boats run from roughly 09:00 to 16:00 and leave when full (about 35–40 passengers), so arrive mid-morning. The fare plus harbour tax comes to about AUD 2.50 · USD 1.80 (IDR 33,000 for Gili Trawangan).

If you would rather not wait, the cooperative’s speedboats leave on the hour from 9am to 4pm for about AUD 8 · USD 5.60 (IDR 100,000), according to The Gilis island-hopping guide.

Crossing times are short: about 15 minutes to Gili Air, 20 to Meno and 30 to Trawangan. The real time cost is the road. From Kuta Mandalika to Bangsal is about 2 hours (80 km), and a private driver costs AUD 42–62 · USD 30–45 (IDR 540,000–800,000), per Lombok Loop’s Bangsal guide.

From Senggigi it is only 30 minutes. Buy tickets only at the official office and ignore anyone who grabs your bags on the road in.

How to split your nights between Lombok and the Gilis

– 4 nights: 1 night Senggigi, 3 nights on one Gili. Skip the south; it is too far for a short trip. – 7 nights: 3 nights Kuta Mandalika, 1 night Senaru for the waterfalls, 3 nights on a Gili. – 10 nights: add a 3-day Rinjani trek from Senaru, then finish on Gili Air or Meno to rest your legs.

Do the mainland first and the Gilis last. Ending on a car-free island after a Rinjani trek is far better than the reverse, and it keeps the long Kuta-to-Bangsal drive in the middle of the trip.

Australians have no direct flight to Lombok, so most connect through Denpasar; check the best time to visit Lombok before booking, because Rinjani’s trails closed from 1 January to 31 March 2026 for the wet season.

The verdict for each type of traveller

– First-timers with under a week: Gilis. Easy logistics, guaranteed turtles, no driving. – Couples: Both. Kuta Mandalika for empty beaches, then Gili Meno or Air for quiet sunsets. – Families: Mainland base plus Gili Air.

Gili Trawangan’s party strip suits kids poorly, and the mainland has more space and pools. – Budget travellers and backpackers: Gili Trawangan for the hostel scene, but the mainland is cheaper for food and rooms once you leave the tourist strips. – Surfers and hikers: Mainland Lombok, no contest. The Gilis are a rest stop, not the trip.

If safety is on your mind, read is Lombok safe first; scooter crashes and spiked drinks are the main risks, not the islands themselves.

Where to stay in Lombok or Gili Islands

– Kuta Mandalika: the south-coast base for surfers, couples and anyone who wants beaches without crowds. – Senggigi: the practical choice for short trips, only 30 minutes from Bangsal. – Gili Air or Gili Meno: for families, couples and divers who want the island feel without Trawangan’s nightlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lombok better than the Gili Islands?

For trips of 5 nights or more, yes. Lombok offers surf, Rinjani, waterfalls and quiet beaches the Gilis cannot match. For 3 nights or fewer, the Gilis win because there is no driving and the snorkelling is right off the beach. With a week, split your time and see both.

How long should I spend on the Gili Islands?

Two to three nights on one island suits most travellers, and four is the most people need. The islands are small enough to walk around in an afternoon, so extra time is mostly beach, snorkelling and diving. Divers doing a course should allow three to four nights.

How do you get from Lombok to the Gili Islands?

Drive to Bangsal harbour on the north-west coast, then take a public boat or the hourly speedboat. Crossings take about 15 minutes to Gili Air and 30 minutes to Gili Trawangan. Public boats leave when full, roughly 09:00 to 16:00, so do not plan a late-afternoon arrival.

Can you see turtles on the Gili Islands?

Yes. Green and hawksbill turtles are regularly seen off Gili Meno’s north coast and along the reef on Gili Air’s east side. Snorkel trips visit these spots daily, and Meno is the quietest place to see them. Keep your distance and never touch or chase them.

Is it worth staying on mainland Lombok?

Yes, if you want more than a beach. Kuta Mandalika has surf and empty bays, and Senaru gives access to waterfalls and Rinjani. The mainland is also less crowded and cheaper once you leave the tourist strips. Skip it only if you have under four nights.
