Pick Gili Trawangan if you want 3 or 4 nights of bars, dive schools and the widest choice of food; pick Gili Air if you are a couple or family who wants good snorkelling and nights that wind down early.
The two islands sit next to each other off Lombok, share the same ban on motor vehicles and the same fast boats from Bali, so the real choice is about noise, pace and who you are travelling with. Gili Meno is the quiet third option.

The real difference: noise after 10pm
Gili Trawangan (Gili T) is the biggest, busiest and loudest of the three. Its east-coast strip holds most of the restaurants, dive shops and beds in the Gilis, and something is on most nights. Travelling with mates, that is the point. With a toddler asleep at 7pm, it is a problem: bass carries on an island 3 km long.

Gili Air is the middle ground and the closest island to Lombok. It has plenty of cafes, a few bars and good snorkelling off the east coast, but nights finish earlier. You get sunset drinks and dinner choice without the 2am crowd outside your bungalow.
Snorkelling and turtles: where each island wins
Group snorkel trips from both islands circle all three Gilis, so you can see turtles from either base. The headline stop is The Nest: 48 life-size figures by sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, sunk off Gili Meno’s west coast in 2017 as an artificial reef, about 100 metres offshore in 3 to 6 metres of water and roughly 15 minutes by boat from Gili T or Gili Air.
Gili Air suits families because its east-coast snorkelling starts from the beach. Gili T is the better scuba base, with more dive schools competing on course prices.
Dive shops add a one-off eco donation for the Gili Eco Trust, a non-profit the dive shops founded in 2000 to fund reef protection, beach cleans and recycling. It is commonly IDR 50,000 (AUD 3.90 · USD 2.80) per diver. Never touch or chase turtles.
Getting there from Bali and Lombok: times and fares
From Bali, fast boats leave three ports:
– Padang Bai: shortest crossing, about 1.5 to 2 hours, IDR 325,000–530,000 (AUD 25–41 · USD 18–30) one way. – Sanur: about 2 to 3.5 hours, IDR 425,000–550,000 (AUD 33–43 · USD 24–31). – Serangan: operators include Gili Getaway and Bluewater Express, about 2h15 to 3h20, with fares starting higher than Padang Bai.
The Lombok Strait gets rough on windy afternoons, so take a morning boat. Check live schedules on Ferryhopper, as operators cut sailings in quiet months.
From Lombok, use Bangsal harbour. The public boat costs IDR 20,000 (AUD 1.55 · USD 1.10) to Gili Air and IDR 23,000 (AUD 1.80 · USD 1.30) to Gili T, takes 20 to 30 minutes, and leaves only when 35 to 40 passengers board. The Karya Bahari speedboat runs hourly for about IDR 85,000–100,000 (AUD 6.60–7.80 · USD 4.75–5.60).
Buy only at the official office on the left side of the harbour; touts claiming the public boat is “full” push charters at IDR 300,000–750,000 (AUD 23–58 · USD 17–42) a head. Our Lombok travel guide covers getting to Bangsal.
Foreign visitors also pay a harbour tax of IDR 10,000–20,000 (AUD 0.80–1.55 · USD 0.55–1.10) on landing, separate from the ticket, and North Lombok’s council has proposed IDR 50,000 (AUD 3.90 · USD 2.80). Bali’s tourist levy does not apply here.
No cars, no scooters: the cidomo question
None of the Gilis allow motor vehicles. You walk, cycle or take a cidomo, the horse-drawn cart that meets the boats. Walking around Gili Air takes about an hour; Gili T about two.
Think twice before hopping in. Welfare groups have documented undernourished, overworked horses, and the Gili Eco Trust and partner vets have run horse clinics for years. With heavy bags a cart from the harbour is fair; for a short stroll, walk. Never ride an overloaded cart, and consider supporting Horses of Gili, which runs a local sanctuary and clinic.
E-bikes are the newer problem. Local rules restrict them for tourist rental, yet they remain common on Gili T and are growing on Gili Air.
Verdict by traveller type
– Couples: Gili Air. Sunset bars and beach snorkelling without the party noise. – Families: Gili Air. Smaller, easier to walk, earlier nights. – Solo travellers and groups: Gili T.
Easiest place to meet people. – Divers: Gili T for the widest pick of dive schools. – Budget travellers: Gili T, where more competition means more cheap beds. – First-timers with 4+ nights: split it, 2 nights on Gili T then 2 on Gili Air.
Gili Meno: the quiet third option
Gili Meno is the sleepiest of the three, with the fewest restaurants and almost no nightlife. It suits honeymooners who want The Nest on their doorstep. Skip it if you need dinner choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gili Air or Gili Trawangan better for families?
Gili Air is the better pick for most families. It is smaller and takes about an hour to walk around, nights finish earlier, and there is decent snorkelling off the east coast without needing a boat. Gili T works for families with teenagers who want more food choice, but book well away from the bar strip.
How long does the fast boat from Bali to the Gili Islands take?
From Padang Bai the crossing takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. From Sanur allow 2 to 3.5 hours, and from Serangan about 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes. Some boats stop at one island before the other, and rough seas can add time, so avoid booking a tight onward connection the same day.
Can you swim with turtles on Gili Air?
Yes. Turtles are often seen around all three Gilis, and group snorkel trips from Gili Air visit the best turtle spots plus The Nest statues off Gili Meno, about 15 minutes away by boat. Keep your distance, never touch them, and choose operators that do not feed fish or chase wildlife.
Is there a tourist tax for the Gili Islands?
Yes. Foreign visitors pay a harbour tax of IDR 10,000–20,000 when landing, separate from the boat fare, and a council proposal would lift it to IDR 50,000. Divers and snorkellers also usually pay a one-off Gili Eco Trust reef donation. Bali’s tourist levy does not cover Lombok or the Gilis.
Can you visit both Gili T and Gili Air on one trip?
Yes, and it is the best option if you have 4 nights or more. The islands are a short boat hop apart, so spend 2 nights on Gili T for the food and nightlife, then move to Gili Air for a slower finish. Book the inter-island boat a day ahead in peak season.
