Pick Koh Samui if you want an airport, resort comfort and easy logistics, and Koh Phangan if you want the Full Moon Party, yoga or quieter beaches, because the 2 islands sit only 30 minutes apart by Lomprayah catamaran.

For most Australians on a 7 to 10 day trip, the smart answer is to base on Samui and add Phangan as a 2 to 4 night side trip, or the reverse if you are there to party or practise.

Factor Koh Phangan Koh Samui

The real difference: access decides more than beaches

Koh Samui has its own airport, privately owned by Bangkok Airways, with flights from Bangkok taking roughly 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes. Bangkok Airways and Scoot also fly in from Singapore, which matters if you are coming from Sydney, Melbourne or Perth and would rather connect in Changi than Suvarnabhumi. That convenience has a price, and whether Koh Samui is worth visiting partly hinges on one-way Bangkok fares of AUD 115 to 280.

Koh Phangan has no airport. You fly to Samui, take a taxi of around 10 minutes to Bang Rak pier (budget AUD 11–19 · USD 8–14, THB 300–500), then catch a boat. That extra leg sounds small, but with kids, a late arrival or a tight 7-day itinerary, it is the main reason Samui wins for families.

Ferry between Samui and Phangan: times and prices

According to Inside Samui’s ferry guide, checked this month:

– Lomprayah: fastest at 30 minutes on an air-conditioned catamaran to Thong Sala, from AUD 10 · USD 7 (THB 250). – Seatran and Songserm: about 45 minutes to Thong Sala, from AUD 8 · USD 6 (THB 200). – Haad Rin Queen: runs from Big Buddha pier on Samui straight to Haad Rin, under an hour, from AUD 13 · USD 9 (THB 325). Handy on party night because it skips the drive across Phangan.

Book the evening Haad Rin Queen sailings early around Full Moon dates, and expect choppier crossings once the monsoon arrives.

Full Moon Party 2026 dates and what Haad Rin is really like

The Full Moon Party runs from sunset to sunrise on Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) on Phangan’s south-eastern tip. Remaining 2026 dates, cross-checked against the Full Moon Party schedule and a second listing:

– 27 October (flagged as possibly shifting because a Buddhist holy day falls on the 26th, so confirm the week before) – 24 November – 24 December – 31 December (New Year’s Eve, the biggest night)

Entry is about AUD 8 · USD 6 (THB 200), cash only, for a wristband. Crowds range from a few thousand to over 30,000. Haad Rin rooms that normally cost AUD 17–25 · USD 12–18 (THB 400–600) jump to AUD 33–62 · USD 24–45 (THB 800–1,500) on party night, often with 3 to 5 night minimum stays.

The honest downsides: drownings, drink spiking, fire-rope burns and undercover police enforcing Thailand’s harsh drug laws are all documented. Read Smartraveller’s Thailand advice before you go, and do not swim after drinking. Samui has its own short list, and our Samui risk guide for Australians covers spiked drinks, bootleg spirits and the Level 2 Smartraveller rating for Thailand.

Haad Rin vs the quieter north and west of Phangan

Phangan is really three islands in one:

– Haad Rin (south-east): party central, cheap rooms, noisy and messy in the days around each full moon. – Srithanu and Zen Beach (west): the wellness hub, with yoga schools, vegan cafes, sound-healing and sunset drum circles.

This is where people come for a week and stay a month. – Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach (north): the most beautiful, least developed coast. Bottle Beach is reached by longtail boat from Thong Nai Pan in 10 to 15 minutes for AUD 5.5–12.5 · USD 4–9 (THB 150–300), or over a rough mountain road.

If you are not into the party, the north coast gives you a Phangan most visitors never see.

Verdict by traveller type

– Families: Koh Samui. Airport access, calmer resort beaches like Choeng Mon and Bophut, and less driving on hilly dirt roads. – Couples: Samui for a polished honeymoon; Phangan’s north coast if you want seclusion over room service. – Budget travellers and backpackers: Koh Phangan.

Cheaper rooms, social hostels and the party. – Yoga and wellness: Koh Phangan, specifically Srithanu. – First-timers in Thailand: Samui as a base, with a Phangan day trip or short stay. If Koh Tao is on your shortlist too, see our Koh Samui vs Koh Tao breakdown.

Monsoon timing: why October to December changes the answer

Unlike Phuket, the Gulf islands get their heavy rain from the north-east monsoon, usually late October to mid-December. November is the wettest month, with averages of roughly 445 to 490 mm depending on the source. Ferries can be cancelled in rough seas and the October Full Moon Party tends to be smaller.

That makes Samui the safer bet late in the year: if it rains for 3 days, you have resort pools, spas and restaurants. On Phangan’s north coast, a washed-out road can strand you. For month-by-month detail, check our guide to the best time to visit Koh Samui.

Where to stay in Koh Phangan or Koh Samui

– Bophut and Fisherman’s Village, Samui: walkable, calmer than Chaweng, a lively Friday night market. Best for couples and families. – Chaweng or Choeng Mon, Samui: Chaweng for nightlife and the longest beach; Choeng Mon for quiet five-star spa resorts. – Srithanu or Thong Nai Pan, Phangan: Srithanu for yoga and community, Thong Nai Pan for beach seclusion. Stay in Haad Rin only if the party is your reason for coming.
