Choose Koh Tao if you want a PADI Open Water card in 3 days for THB 9,900–12,950, and Koh Phangan if you want the Full Moon Party (next one 27 October 2026), yoga in Srithanu or near-empty north-coast beaches.
The two islands sit about an hour apart on the Lomprayah catamaran, so the real question is the order and the split. For most Australians with 8–10 nights, that means Tao first for diving, then Phangan to unwind.

The real difference: how you spend your nights versus your mornings
On Koh Tao the day starts early: morning dive boats, theory in the afternoon, and a social life that winds down at a sensible hour. It is small, steep and casual, and almost everything revolves around the reef.
Koh Phangan is really three islands in one. Haad Rin in the south-east is the party peninsula. Srithanu on the west coast is a wellness village of yoga shalas, cafes and sound-healing sessions. The north (Chaloklum, Bottle Beach, Thong Nai Pan) is the quiet end, with long bays and few people. You choose Phangan for the version of it you want, and then base yourself in that corner.
Koh Phangan: Full Moon Party dates, yoga and the quiet north
The Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Sunrise Beach costs AUD 8 · USD 6 (THB 200) cash at the gate. According to the official party schedule, the remaining 2026 dates are:

– 27 October (may shift because of the Buddhist holiday on the 26th) – 24 November – 24 December (Christmas Eve) – 31 December (New Year’s Eve party, not an astronomical full moon)
Dates can move by a day or two around Thai holidays. What party night is really like, and Haad Rin’s safety traps, are covered in our Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui comparison.
Skipping the party? Srithanu’s drop-in yoga classes run AUD 8–20 · USD 6–14 (THB 200–500) depending on the studio. For beaches, the north wins. Bottle Beach has no proper road access, so most people take a longtail from Chaloklum for AUD 6 · USD 4 (THB 150) each way, about 15 minutes. That boat ride is exactly why it stays so quiet.
Koh Tao: the cheapest serious dive certification in the region
Published 2026 prices for the PADI Open Water course range from THB 9,900 at Isla Tortuga Divers to THB 12,950 at Black Turtle Dive, or AUD 390–515 · USD 285–370. Both include equipment, digital PADI materials, certification fees and boat dives. The course takes 3 days (Black Turtle quotes 3–4), so book at least four nights to allow for a weather day.
Advanced Open Water at Isla Tortuga adds 2 days for THB 9,000, or AUD 355 · USD 255. Plenty of people arrive to “just try diving” and stay for both, so leave slack in the plan.
Ferry from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao: times and prices
All boats leave Thong Sala Pier on Phangan’s west coast and arrive at Mae Haad Pier on Tao. There is no longtail service on this crossing.
– Lomprayah catamaran: departures listed at 8:30am and 3:30pm, about 1 hour, AUD 18–24 · USD 13–17 (THB 450–600). – Seatran Discovery: two direct crossings a day, around 1h15–1h30, AUD 26 · USD 19 (THB 650). – Songserm: one slower morning boat, about 2 hours, AUD 14 · USD 10 (THB 350).
Timetables change by season and are often cancelled in rough weather, so confirm on the Lomprayah website before you plan a tight connection. If you are coming from or going to Samui’s airport, our Koh Samui vs Koh Tao guide covers that longer leg.
How to do both: dive first, party second
Do Koh Tao first, so you start the dive course rested rather than straight off a Haad Rin night. Then take the morning boat to Thong Sala and finish on Phangan, a short hop from Samui’s airport for the flight home.
A simple 9-night plan:
– Nights 1–4, Koh Tao: Open Water course plus a spare day. – Nights 5–9, Koh Phangan: time it so one of these nights is a Full Moon if you want it, or base in Srithanu or the north if you do not.
Got only 5 nights? Pick one island. Two ferry days out of five is too much time on boats.
Verdict by traveller type
– Families: Neither is ideal; Phangan’s north coast is the gentler option. If you are open to other islands, our Koh Samui vs Krabi breakdown suits families better. – Couples: Phangan’s north or Srithanu for slow days; Tao if you both want to dive. – Budget travellers: Koh Tao, if you dive.
The course is the big spend, and the rest of island life is simple and casual. – First-timers to Thailand: Phangan, staying away from Haad Rin, because it gives more variety on one island. – Solo travellers: Koh Tao. Dive courses are the easiest way to meet people. – Party seekers: Phangan, timed to a Full Moon date.
Think twice about October and November on either island
The north-east monsoon brings the Gulf’s heaviest rain from late October to mid-December, and Tao’s dive conditions are at their worst: Crystal Dive lists 5–10 m visibility for October to November, against 15–30 m in March to May, which is also the best whale shark window. Ferries get rough and some sailings are cancelled.
If your leave is fixed for our spring, compare the seasons in our Phuket vs Koh Samui guide before you book, because the Andaman side is drier in November.
Where to stay in Koh Phangan or Koh Tao
– Thong Sala and Srithanu, Koh Phangan: next to the ferry pier, with the night market and yoga scene. Best for first-timers, yogis and anyone hopping islands. – Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach, Koh Phangan: the quiet north. Best for couples and families wanting calm water. – Sairee Beach, Koh Tao: the main strip of dive schools, bars and sunsets. Best for divers and solo travellers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Koh Phangan or Koh Tao better for a first visit?
Koh Phangan, as long as you stay outside Haad Rin. It is bigger, with a yoga village, quiet north-coast beaches and a party scene you can opt into. How long is the ferry from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao?
About 1 hour on the Lomprayah catamaran, with departures listed at 8:30am and 3:30pm from Thong Sala, for THB 450–600. Seatran Discovery takes 1h15–1h30 for THB 650, and the slower Songserm boat takes about 2 hours. Every boat arrives at Mae Haad Pier, and rough weather can cancel sailings.
When is the next Full Moon Party in 2026?
The remaining 2026 dates are 27 October, 24 November, 24 December and the New Year’s Eve party on 31 December. The October date may move because of the Buddhist holiday on the 26th. Entry is THB 200 cash. Check the schedule again the week before you go, as dates can shift by a day or two.
