This 5-day Bali itinerary covers 2 bases, with one transfer of 60 to 90 minutes between the south coast and Ubud. It suits first-time visitors who want beach clubs and Ubud culture without a rental car, and it does not suit anyone set on Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands, or a Mount Batur sunrise climb in the same trip.
| Day | Base | Main plan | Transfer time | Approx cost/person (AUD · USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| 4 | Ubud | Tegalalang Rice Terraces, Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, coffee plantation | Local, 20-40 min each way | AUD 139-208 · USD 100-150 (IDR 1,763,000-2,645,000) |
| 5 | Ubud | Morning rice-paddy walk, transfer to the airport for departure | Ubud to airport, 60-90 min | AUD 158-236 · USD 114-170 (IDR 2,010,000-2,997,000) |
Days 1 to 2 – south coast base
Seminyak works as the arrival base because it sits 15 to 20 minutes from the airport and puts both dining and a Uluwatu day trip within reach. Land, clear immigration, and check in on day 1, then keep the rest of the day light with a beach walk and a sunset beach club rather than a packed sightseeing list. With only a long weekend, our 4-day Bali plan keeps this same Seminyak and Uluwatu sunset start, then gives Ubud the final two nights. If the shortest airport run matters more than dining, our head-to-head of Seminyak and Kuta weighs Kuta’s 5 km transfer against Seminyak’s better food.
Day 2 is a full-day driver hire south to the Bukit Peninsula, covering Uluwatu Temple on its cliff edge, the surf break at Padang Padang, and a cliff-top beach club for lunch, all inside a 45 to 60 minute drive each way.
Book the driver for the full day rather than a return trip only, since Uluwatu itself has enough coastline to fill an afternoon before the drive back to Seminyak for a second night. This two-day block is the only place on the route where Uluwatu appears, because the itinerary does not add it as a third base.

Days 3 to 5 – Ubud base
Ubud is the second and last base, reached by a single transfer that runs 60 to 90 minutes given Seminyak’s own 15 to 20 minute distance from the airport puts it in roughly the same transfer band as the airport-Ubud run.
Day 3 covers the transfer itself plus Ubud Palace and Ubud Market in the afternoon, with an evening Kecak dance performance as an easy first-night activity.
Day 4 is the rice-terrace day: Tegalalang Rice Terraces in the morning, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary at midday, and a coffee plantation stop on the way back, all short local drives of 20 to 40 minutes rather than a single long circuit.
Day 5 keeps the morning free for a rice-paddy walk or a spa session before the 60 to 90 minute transfer back to the airport, which means building in a buffer if the flight departs before early evening.
Why one base change is the limit in five days
Bali’s road network makes distance a poor guide to travel time, and this itinerary holds to one base change because a second one erodes a full day.
The direct route from Ubud to Uluwatu covers only 54 kilometres, a 51-minute drive on an empty road, yet real transfers on that route run 2 to 2.5 hours once traffic through Denpasar, Kuta, and Jimbaran is factored in. Leaving Uluwatu between 4pm and 7pm adds more time again, since that window catches the sunset crowd heading back into town.
Weekend timing compounds it further: Friday afternoon into Saturday morning is the worst window heading up to Ubud as weekend villa traffic builds, and Sunday evening is the worst window coming back south.
A three-base version of this trip, Seminyak to Ubud to Uluwatu, would spend two of five days mostly in transit rather than on the ground, which is why Uluwatu here stays a day trip from Seminyak instead of an overnight stop.
Anyone who wants Uluwatu as a proper base with its own nights should treat that as a different, longer trip; see the 7-day Bali itinerary for a route that gives it one. That low-transfer rhythm is exactly why Bali beats Vietnam for short breaks of 7 to 10 days, while Vietnam’s multi-city routes need two weeks or more.
What does not fit in five days
Four popular add-ons get cut from this route, and each fails for a specific timing reason rather than a lack of interest. With 14 days instead, our two-week Bali itinerary with five bases puts the boat leg in the middle, so a cancelled crossing never costs you your flight home.

Nusa Penida needs a 45-minute fast boat from Sanur or Padang Bai, and Padang Bai itself sits 90 minutes from Ubud, so a day trip from the Ubud base burns close to 4.5 hours in transit before the boat queue and the island’s own unpaved roads are counted.
The Gili Islands sit further out again: the fastest crossing is 90 minutes from Padang Bai, but from Sanur it stretches to 2.5 to 3 hours each way, which makes the Gilis an overnight trip at minimum, not a day excursion from either base here.
West Bali National Park is the most extreme case, at roughly 3.5 to 4 hours from Ubud and closer to 4.5 hours from Seminyak one way, putting it fully outside a five-day frame.
A Mount Batur sunrise climb is the trap that catches the most travelers, since guides collect hotels around 3am for the hike, and the exhaustion that follows routinely wipes out the next day’s plans as well, converting a one-day activity into a two-day cost.
Anyone still weighing five days against a longer trip that could fit one or two of these should check how many days you actually need in Bali before booking flights.
What five days costs
Five days on this route runs USD 562 to USD 835 per person at a mid-range pace, which converts to AUD 780 to AUD 1,159, or IDR 9,913,000 to IDR 14,722,000, using a rate of 1 USD to 17,631 IDR checked today.
That figure covers accommodation, food, local transport, the Uluwatu driver day, and the two intercity transfers, but it excludes flights and the entry-visa costs paid on arrival.
Indonesia’s combined Visa on Arrival and Tourist Levy runs to roughly AUD 51 · USD 37 (IDR 650,000) per person, paid once rather than daily, and an evening Kecak dance in Ubud adds about AUD 12 · USD 9 (IDR 159,000) if you go.
Travelers running a tighter budget or a higher one should treat this five-day figure as a mid-range midpoint rather than a fixed number, since a backpacker pace and a luxury pace both diverge from it fast. For the full breakdown across budget, mid-range, and luxury tiers, see the Bali travel budget guide.
Where to stay on this route
Seminyak is the pick for days 1 and 2 on this specific route because its beach-club dining and short Uluwatu run outweigh Ubud’s quieter pace for an arrival base, but it is not the only option for a south-coast start.
Canggu suits a more laid-back, surf-first version of the same two days, and Uluwatu itself works as a base only for travelers willing to give it more than a day trip, which this itinerary does not.
