No, Malaysia is not expensive: a backpacker gets by on AUD 55 · USD 40 a day and a mid-range traveller on AUD 153 · USD 110, almost level with Thailand. The catch is alcohol.

Malaysia taxes beer harder than almost anywhere in Asia, so a big night in a Kuala Lumpur rooftop bar can cost more than three days of hawker meals. At MYR 2.84 to the Australian dollar, food and transport are cheap; drinks and resorts are not.

Cost Reality in 2026 What to do
Hawker meals AUD 2.50–4 · USD 1.80–2.90 (MYR 7–11) a plate Eat at hawker centres and kopitiams for most meals
City transport Grab across central KL AUD 3–5 · USD 2.20–3.60 (MYR 8–15) Use Grab or the MRT, skip street taxis
Beer in a KL pub AUD 8 · USD 5.80 (MYR 23) a pint Drink in Langkawi or go dry on the mainland
Rooftop cocktails AUD 12–33 · USD 9–24 (MYR 35–95) each Book one sunset session, use happy hours
Tourism tax AUD 3.50 · USD 2.50 (MYR 10) per room, per night Budget it on top of every hotel quote

Daily budgets for Australians: backpacker, mid-range, comfort

The Currency Shop’s August 2026 Malaysia spending guide puts the daily cost per person at:

Style Per day Per week Typical bed
Backpacker AUD 55 · USD 40 (MYR 155) AUD 384 · USD 277 Dorm or fan room
Mid-range AUD 153 · USD 110 (MYR 433) AUD 1,073 · USD 773 AUD 70 · USD 50 (MYR 200) double
Comfort AUD 474 · USD 341 (MYR 1,345) AUD 3,325 · USD 2,396 AUD 227 · USD 164 (MYR 646) double

Cut the alcohol and a couple sharing a room usually comes in under the mid-range figure. A KL dorm bed costs AUD 6–12 · USD 4.30–8.60 (MYR 18–35).

Kuala Lumpur: cheap to eat, costly to drink

The cheap side: the MRT and LRT charge AUD 0.40–2.20 · USD 0.30–1.60 (MYR 1.20–6.20) a ride, and a Grab from KLCC to Bukit Bintang costs AUD 3–5 · USD 2.20–3.60. The KLIA Ekspres from the airport is AUD 19 · USD 14 (MYR 55) until 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 it rises to MYR 65, which is AUD 23 · USD 17.

Hawker food stall with steaming noodle dishes in Kuala Lumpur

The expensive side is nightlife. SkyBar charges AUD 18 · USD 13 (MYR 50) a drink, though its 4–8pm Golden Hour deal gives you three cocktails for AUD 38 · USD 27 (MYR 108). Our 7-day Malaysia itinerary gives KL three nights, so plan one rooftop evening rather than three.

Penang: the best value stop in the country

George Town is where Malaysia is cheapest for the least effort. A plate of char koay teow costs AUD 2.50–4 · USD 1.80–2.90 at most hawker stalls, although the famous queue-worthy stalls charge MYR 12–17.50. Three hawker meals cost less than one Sydney café brunch. Our guide to the best food in Penang lists which stalls deserve the queue.

You get there on the ETS train from KL Sentral to Butterworth. Under KTM’s flexi pricing fares range from AUD 10–30 · USD 7–22 (MYR 29–86) depending on the service and how early you book. That beats flying once bag fees are added.

Langkawi: duty-free beer, expensive resorts

Langkawi has been duty-free since 1987, which reverses the alcohol problem. A can of Tiger from a duty-free shop costs AUD 0.85 · USD 0.60 (MYR 2.40). A 24-can slab costs AUD 19–26 · USD 14–19 (MYR 55–75), against AUD 35–42 · USD 25–30 (MYR 100–120) on the mainland.

The rest of Langkawi costs more than it looks. Foreigners now pay AUD 16 · USD 11.50 (MYR 45) one way on the Kuala Perlis ferry after an April 2026 increase. The SkyCab standard gondola costs AUD 28 · USD 20 (MYR 80) for non-Malaysians.

The resort end is properly expensive: The Datai Langkawi starts at AUD 655 · USD 470 (MYR 1,860) a night. The 10-day Malaysia itinerary adds Langkawi as a beach finale, which suits travellers who stay in Pantai Cenang rather than at a rainforest resort.

What is not cheap: alcohol, rooftops and resorts

– Alcohol on the mainland. Budget 2026 raised beer excise by 10% from 1 November 2025, the first increase since 2016. On top of that come import duty and 10% sales tax.

A pint of local beer in a bar costs AUD 5–9 · USD 3.60–6.50 (MYR 15–25), and a craft beer costs AUD 11–18 · USD 8–13 (MYR 30–50). – Hotel extras. The MYR 10 tourism tax is charged per room, per night, and many hotels add service charge on top. – Peak dates. School holidays and Chinese New Year push up room rates. Use our best time to visit Malaysia guide to avoid those weeks.

People who drink every night and only want five-star resorts should think twice before assuming Malaysia is a cheap option.

Malaysia vs Thailand vs Bali on cost

Thailand comes out at AUD 53 · USD 38 a day for budget travellers and AUD 146 · USD 105 for mid-range, so it is a fraction cheaper than Malaysia. Its beer is cheaper too, at AUD 4 · USD 2.90 a bottle against AUD 5 · USD 3.60.

Bali guides for Australians put budget travel at AUD 50–100 · USD 36–72 a day and mid-range at AUD 150–250 · USD 108–180.

The verdict: Malaysia matches Thailand for food and transport, beats Bali on public transport (Bali has no metro or intercity trains), and loses to both once you drink. Non-drinkers and food-first travellers get the best value in Malaysia. Party travellers get more for their money in Thailand. Weighing cost against risk? Read our guide to whether Malaysia is safe.

Where to stay in Malaysia

– Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur: suits first-timers and budget travellers. Dorms and mid-range hotels are packed together, it is walkable to hawker streets, and the MRT is close by. – George Town, Penang: suits food lovers and couples. Restored shophouse guesthouses are the best value for money in Malaysia. – Pantai Cenang, Langkawi: suits beach travellers who want duty-free prices and walk-in restaurants without paying resort rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do I need per day in Malaysia?

A backpacker needs around AUD 55 · USD 40 (MYR 155) a day and a mid-range traveller around AUD 153 · USD 110 (MYR 433), according to the Currency Shop’s August 2026 figures. Those totals cover accommodation, meals, transport and some activities. Mainland alcohol is the fastest way to exceed them.

Is Malaysia cheaper than Thailand?

Not quite. Thailand’s daily budgets are slightly lower, at AUD 53 · USD 38 for budget and AUD 146 · USD 105 for mid-range travellers, and its beer is cheaper. Hawker food and city transport cost much the same in both countries. Malaysia’s English signage and Grab coverage make it easier to stay on budget.

Why is alcohol so expensive in Malaysia?

Malaysia stacks excise duty, import duty and 10% sales tax on every drink, and Budget 2026 raised beer excise by another 10%. A pint in a Kuala Lumpur pub averages MYR 23, which is AUD 8 · USD 5.80. Langkawi is the exception: it is duty-free, and a can of Tiger costs under one Australian dollar.

Should I bring cash or a card to Malaysia?

Bring both. Hawker stalls, night markets and small guesthouses often take cash only. Hotels, malls and Grab take cards. Use a fee-free travel card and withdraw ringgit from bank ATMs rather than exchanging Australian dollars at the airport.

Is Langkawi more expensive than the rest of Malaysia?

For drinks it is much cheaper, because it is duty-free. Getting there costs more: foreigners pay MYR 45 for the ferry, attractions like the SkyCab charge MYR 80, and top resorts start at more than AUD 650 a night. Staying in Pantai Cenang keeps a Langkawi trip close to mainland prices.
