Pick Boracay if you want 4 km of powdery White Beach and walkable nightlife for a 4 to 5 night beach break; pick Cebu if you have 7 nights or more and want a hub for sardine runs, whale sharks and day trips to Bohol and Bantayan.
Boracay is easier once you land; Cebu is easier to reach from Australia and far more varied, but costs you hours on buses and boats.

Getting there from Australia: Cebu has the edge
Only Cebu can be reached from Australia without a domestic leg. Jetstar launched Australia’s first nonstop Brisbane to Cebu route in December 2025, a seasonal service that ran until 16 May 2026. Check whether it returns for 2026–27.
Everyone else connects through Manila, which has nonstop flights from Sydney (Qantas, Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, about 8.5 hours), Melbourne and Brisbane, plus Jetstar’s year-round Perth service, a 6h35 flight three times a week (Jetstar newsroom).
Boracay always needs a second flight. Manila to Caticlan takes 55 minutes to 1h15, and Cebu Pacific flies Cebu to Caticlan in about 1h05. From Caticlan airport it is 7–10 minutes to the jetty, then a 10–15 minute boat ride.
At the jetty you pay a PHP 300 environmental fee (foreigners, once per stay), a PHP 150 terminal fee and a PHP 50–100 boat fare, so budget AUD 11–12 · USD 8–9 per person on arrival. Kalibo flights are cheaper but add 1.5 to 2 hours by van, at AUD 4–5.50 · USD 2.90–4 (PHP 180–250).
Boracay: White Beach, sunsets and nightlife in a compact island
White Beach runs about 4 km down the west coast, split into Stations 1, 2 and 3, with almost everything you need on the sand path behind it. Station 1 has the widest, prettiest stretch and the pricier resorts. Station 2 is the noisy middle, with D’Mall, bars, fire dancers and the sunset sailing boats (paraws). Station 3 is quieter and cheaper.

You walk to dinner, walk home from the bar and never touch a bus timetable. The flip side: once you have done White Beach, Puka Beach, a sunset sail and island-hopping, there is little left, so we cap it at five nights unless you are kitesurfing on Bulabog Beach.
Cebu as a hub: Moalboal, Oslob, Bantayan and Bohol
Cebu City is not a beach destination; treat it and Mactan as a base. Our Cebu travel guide covering every region of the island covers the bases; these four trips are why you choose Cebu:
– Moalboal: the sardine run sits 20–30 m off Panagsama Beach, all year, no dive certificate needed. Ceres buses take 3–4 hours and cost AUD 4.60 · USD 3.30 (PHP 209–210). A private car runs AUD 78–111 · USD 56–80 and takes 2–2.5 hours. – Oslob: whale shark viewing runs 6am to noon only.
Fees range from AUD 22–33 · USD 16–24 (PHP 1,000–1,500) depending on whether you watch from the boat or snorkel. The sharks are hand-fed, which many marine biologists criticise. – Bantayan: a 4–5 hour bus to Hagnaya then a 1.5 hour ferry, at AUD 7–9 · USD 5–6.50 (PHP 330–392) for the boat.
Boracay-grade sand without the crowds. – Bohol: OceanJet fast ferries from Pier 1 to Tagbilaran take about 2 hours, at AUD 20–35 · USD 14–25 (PHP 880–1,560) depending on class. Stay two nights for the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers.
Amihan, habagat and typhoons: when each one works
Amihan, the northeast monsoon, brings dry, calm months from roughly November to April or May, with White Beach at its glassy best. Habagat, the southwest monsoon from June to October, pushes chop, rain and seaweed onto White Beach, and boats switch to Tabon port. Resort prices can drop 30–50 percent. Our month-by-month Boracay season guide also covers the February–March lumot algae.
Cebu copes better with habagat, but it is not typhoon-proof: Typhoon Kalmaegi (Tino) caused deadly flash floods around Cebu in early November 2025 (CNN), so treat November as shoulder season. Late December to April suits Australian summer school holidays and Easter. Check our guide to the best time to visit Cebu before locking in dates.
Safety and Smartraveller levels
Smartraveller rates the Philippines overall at level 2, “exercise a high degree of caution”, because of terrorism and violent crime. That level covers Boracay (Aklan), Cebu and Bohol. The higher levels apply only to Mindanao: level 3 for eastern Mindanao (excluding Camiguin, Dinagat and Siargao) and level 4 for central and western Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.
The page was last updated on 24 September 2026. The real risks in both places are pickpockets, overloaded boats and weather cancellations, so use licensed ferry operators.
Verdict by traveller type
– Couples on a 5-night beach holiday: Boracay. Sunsets, walkable dinners, zero logistics. – Families with young kids: Boracay in amihan season, based at the quieter ends of the beach. – Budget travellers: Cebu. Buses and ferries cost very little, and there are no island fees on top. – Divers and snorkellers: Cebu, easily.
Moalboal alone beats anything on Boracay underwater. – First-timers with 10 days or more: Cebu as the base, plus one Cebu to Caticlan flight for 3–4 nights on Boracay at the end. – Partygoers: Boracay. Cebu City has nightlife, but nowhere you can stumble home along the sand.
Where to stay in Boracay or Cebu
– Boracay Station 1 or 2: Station 1 for couples who want the best sand. Station 2 for first-timers who want bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Our shortlist of the best Boracay hotels by station names specific places. – Mactan / Lapu-Lapu (Cebu): 15–45 minutes from the airport, with resort beaches and dive shops.
Suits families and stopovers. – Moalboal (Panagsama): cheap guesthouses and dive resorts on the water. Best for divers and budget travellers who want one southern base for Kawasan and Oslob.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Boracay or Cebu better for a first trip to the Philippines?
With 5 nights, choose Boracay: one connection, one beach, no planning. With 10 nights, base yourself in Cebu for Moalboal, Oslob and Bohol, then fly Cebu to Caticlan (about 1h05) for a few nights on White Beach, getting both diving and a classic beach without backtracking through Manila.
Can you fly direct from Australia to Cebu?
Sometimes. Jetstar ran a seasonal Brisbane to Cebu nonstop from December 2025 to 16 May 2026, the first direct route between the two countries. Check whether it is back for the 2026–27 season. Otherwise, fly nonstop to Manila from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth and connect to Cebu on a short domestic flight.
How much is the Boracay environmental fee?
Foreign visitors pay PHP 300 once per stay at the Caticlan jetty, plus a PHP 150 terminal fee and a PHP 50–100 boat fare. Altogether that comes to AUD 11–12 · USD 8–9 per person on arrival. You pay the terminal fee again when you leave. Carry pesos in cash.
Is it easy to visit Boracay and Cebu on the same trip?
Yes. Cebu Pacific flies Mactan-Cebu to Caticlan roughly twice a day in about 1h05, and the boat to Boracay takes 10–15 minutes. Put Boracay last so a weather delay on the boat does not threaten your international connection.
When should you avoid Boracay?
Avoid it in mid-habagat, roughly July to September, if White Beach swimming is the point of the trip. The southwest monsoon brings chop, rain, seaweed and red-flag days on the west coast. Prices drop 30–50 percent, so it still suits travellers who mainly want cheap rooms, food and sunsets.
