Krabi wins for most trips: base yourself in Ao Nang or Railay for 4 or more nights, then add Phi Phi as a 1-night stay or a 50-minute speedboat day trip. The mainland gives you more beaches, cheaper rooms, rock climbing and easy island hopping in every direction.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the smaller, louder, pricier island, brilliant for one night of viewpoints and nightlife, tiring after three. Couples chasing scenery and young party crowds are the exception.

Day trips Railay, 4 Islands, Hong Islands, Phi Phi Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island
Noise and crowds Busy in Ao Nang, calm in Railay Tonsai village packed day and night

Why the mainland suits most Australian travellers

Krabi is a province, not a single town, which is why it beats Phi Phi for anything longer than a weekend.

From Ao Nang you can be at Railay West in 10 to 15 minutes by longtail for AUD 4 · USD 3 (THB 100), and Krabi Town to Railay runs about 40 minutes for AUD 6 · USD 4.50 (THB 150). Add AUD 2 · USD 1.50 (THB 50) after roughly 6pm. Island tours leave daily for the 4 Islands, Hong Islands and Phi Phi.

Limestone cliffs rising above longtail boats on Railay Beach, Krabi

Railay is the climbing capital of Thailand. A half-day introductory course with gear and an instructor costs AUD 105–139 · USD 76–100 (THB 2,500–3,300), and you will not find limestone like it on Phi Phi Don. Our Krabi travel guide covers the wider mainland, from Krabi Town to Klong Muang.

The downside: Ao Nang’s strip is concrete and touts, with an average beach. Railay is prettier but has no road access, so expect to wade with bags at low tide.

What Koh Phi Phi Don is really like

Phi Phi Don is two curved bays joined by a sandy isthmus, with Tonsai village squeezed in between. Narrow lanes, carts, bars, dive shops and day-trippers all share the same few hundred metres, and Loh Dalum becomes a fire-show and bucket-cocktail beach after dark. To sleep before 2am, stay at quieter beaches up the coast.

The upside is real: the sunrise viewpoint above the twin bays is one of Thailand’s great views, the snorkelling is on your doorstep, and once the tour boats leave the island feels genuinely beautiful. Our Phi Phi Islands travel guide breaks down each beach and what it suits.

Maya Bay rules in 2026: what you can and cannot do

Maya Bay sits on uninhabited Phi Phi Leh, so you reach it by boat from either base. The rules:

– Closed every year from 1 August to 30 September, reopening 1 October, so the beach and reef can recover during the southwest monsoon. Tours still run past it, but nobody lands. – No swimming. You can wade in up to roughly knee depth, and boats no longer anchor on the beach. – About an hour on land, with access managed by the national park.

Check the national park’s Phi Phi page before booking, because rules have shifted several times since the 2022 reopening.

Ferries, speedboats and park fees

Route Time Price
Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara pier) to Tonsai 50 min to 2 hrs AUD 18–29 · USD 13–21 (THB 435–700)
Krabi Town (Klong Jilad pier) to Tonsai about 1 to 2 hrs from AUD 20 · USD 15 (THB 480)
Ao Nang Phi Phi speedboat day tour full day AUD 59–84 · USD 42–61 (THB 1,400–2,000)

Ao Nang departures cluster between 9:30am and 2:30pm, with speedboats such as Bundhaya and Wang Sai taking about an hour and slower boats closer to two, per current Ao Nang to Phi Phi timetables.

On top of that, budget for the national park fee for foreign adults, which operators collect as AUD 17 · USD 12 (THB 400), plus the AUD 0.85 · USD 0.60 (THB 20) pier fee when you step off at Tonsai. Day tours usually exclude the park fee, so carry cash.

Overnight on Phi Phi or a day trip?

Stay at least one night if you can. A day trip puts you at Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon at the same hour as every other boat, and you leave just as the island quietens. One night buys the dawn viewpoint and early snorkelling.

Two nights suits divers; beyond three, most travellers are ready for the mainland again. If Phuket is also on your shortlist, our Phuket vs Krabi comparison explains which mainland base suits your flights. Jetstar flies direct to Phuket from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, and many Australians loop Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi by ferry.

The verdict for each type of traveller

– Families: Krabi, clearly. More space, pools, easier transfers and no 2am bar noise. Do Phi Phi as a day tour outside the August–September Maya closure. – Couples: Railay for 3 nights, then 2 nights on a quiet Phi Phi beach away from Tonsai. – Budget travellers: Krabi Town or Ao Nang, where food and rooms cost less and island tours compete hard on price. – First-timers: Ao Nang, which works as an easy base with one Phi Phi night in the middle. – Party crowd and divers: Phi Phi Don, 2 to 3 nights, and skip the guilt.

The Hong Islands: a quieter day trip from Krabi

If Phi Phi’s crowds are the deciding factor against it, the Hong Islands are the mainland’s own answer: a small cluster of limestone islets closer to Krabi than Phi Phi is, with a shallow, almost enclosed lagoon at Koh Hong that stays calmer than most of the open-water stops on a Phi Phi itinerary.

Koh Pak Bia and Koh Lao Lading round out the usual stops, both with narrow white-sand beaches and good shallow snorkelling close to shore.

  • Joined speedboat day tours from Ao Nang or Krabi Town run roughly AUD 50–67 · USD 36–48 (THB 1,200–1,600) per adult, including lunch and snorkel gear on most itineraries.
  • A private full-day longtail boat charter costs more overall, around AUD 439 · USD 316 (THB 10,500), but splits well across a small group that wants its own schedule rather than a shared tour timetable.
  • The national park entrance fee is separate from the tour price on most bookings and runs about AUD 12.50 · USD 9 (THB 300) for adults and AUD 6 · USD 4.50 (THB 150) for children, usually collected in cash on the boat or at the pier.

Because the Hong Islands sit closer to the mainland, the crossing is shorter than the run to Phi Phi, which means less time lost to transit and more time in the water on a single day out.

They do not have Phi Phi’s sunrise viewpoint or overnight nightlife, so treat this as the pick for travellers who want calmer water and fewer boats rather than a substitute for an overnight Phi Phi stay.

Tour operators in Ao Nang run both trips, so comparing the Hong Islands and Phi Phi day-tour prices side by side before booking is straightforward if you are unsure which to choose.

Where to stay in Krabi or Phi Phi

Ao Nang suits families and first-timers who want restaurants, transport and tour pickups at the door. Railay suits couples and climbers who want cliffs and no cars, and accept a boat ride for everything. Klong Muang, north of Ao Nang, suits travellers after a quiet resort beach.

If you add a Phi Phi night, our guide to where to stay in the Phi Phi Islands explains why Tonsai, Loh Dalum and Long Beach feel like different islands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to stay in Krabi or Phi Phi?

For most travellers, Krabi is the better base. Ao Nang and Railay offer more accommodation, cheaper food, rock climbing and day trips to several island groups, including Phi Phi. Phi Phi Don works best as a one- or two-night add-on for viewpoints, snorkelling and nightlife.

How long is the ferry from Ao Nang to Phi Phi?

Speedboats from Nopparat Thara pier in Ao Nang take about 50 minutes to an hour, while slower ferries take around two hours. Fares run AUD 18–29 · USD 13–21 (THB 435–700) one way, and most departures leave between 9:30am and 2:30pm. Expect a separate small pier fee at Tonsai.

Can you swim at Maya Bay in 2026?

No. Swimming has been banned since the bay reopened in 2022, and visitors can only wade to around knee depth. The beach also closes to landings every year from 1 August to 30 September, reopening on 1 October. Boats no longer anchor on the sand, and visits last about an hour.

Is Phi Phi worth an overnight stay?

Yes, at least one night. Day-trippers arrive at peak hour and leave just as the island empties. Staying overnight lets you climb to the viewpoint at sunrise and snorkel before tour boats arrive. Choose a beach away from Tonsai and Loh Dalum if you want to sleep.

Do I need cash for the Phi Phi national park fee?

Yes. The national park fee is usually collected in cash and is often excluded from tour prices. Operators currently quote AUD 17 · USD 12 (THB 400) per foreign adult and AUD 8 · USD 6 (THB 200) per child, plus a small cleaning fee at Tonsai Pier. Carry small notes, as change can be scarce on boats.
